How Kinky Are You? 10 Questions That Reveal Your Kink Level

LISTEN TO THE EPISODE:

Most people have no idea how kinky they really are. Some think they’re completely vanilla, while others assume they’ve seen and done it all. And yet, almost everyone is surprised when they take a closer look at what actually turns them on.

That’s why I created the Kink Personality Type Quiz—to help you figure out where you truly stand. In this post, I’ll share exactly how to use my quiz, why your kink level matters, and the most common mistakes I see along the way.

You can take the free quiz right now below, or grab a notebook and join me as we walk through the questions together.

Why Should You Figure Out Your Kink Level?

If you’re anything like my students, you might feel lost about how to start exploring BDSM, or what your next step should be. And it’s no surprise: most people have no idea where they’re starting from. This leads to two big problems: feeling hopelessly behind, or rushing into things you might not be ready for.

The stages of kink aren’t a competition, but understanding your own level and type helps you set realistic goals, skip a lot of confusion, and avoid burnout or disappointment. Knowing yourself is the first (and honestly, sexiest) step to building confidence in your power exchange dynamic.

How the Kink Personality Type Quiz Works

My quiz has 6 possible results, but today I’m covering the 4 most common: Vanilla Newbie, BDSM Connoisseur, BDSM Expert, and the Kink Chameleon. Each result points to a different relationship with kink, so you’ll get advice and resources tailored to your style.

There are also 2 secret types that you’ll only discover by taking the full quiz. You’ll want to check if you fit into one of those niche categories; some of them might surprise you!

If you want instant results, take the quiz. Otherwise, keep reading for an in-depth breakdown. As you go through each question, be honest. This is about your personal truth, not what sounds impressive.

The 10 Questions That Reveal Your Kink Level

Let’s go through the 10 questions from my quiz, and I’ll explain what your answers mean for your kink journey.

1. How Many BDSM Toys Do You Own (and Actually Use)?

BDSM toys

It’s easy to collect toys, but it’s much more telling to look at what you actually use.

  • If you have one novelty item (like fuzzy cuffs) you bought years ago, you’re probably a vanilla newbie.
  • A basic collection (floggers, ropes, cuffs, riding crop) that you enjoy regularly? That’s BDSM connoisseur territory.
  • A huge toy chest, with dozens of tools you truly know how to use, points to being a BDSM expert.
  • If you only bring out toys occasionally, depending on the mood, you might be a kink chameleon.

Remember, the number of toys doesn’t always mean a lot; it’s about experience, comfort, and real usage.

2. What’s Your Go-To Song for Intimacy?

  • Soft, romantic music points to a vanilla newbie.
  • Having a dedicated, themed playlist (think The Weeknd, Enygma, Rihanna) is a sign of a connoisseur.
  • Answering “it depends on my mood” is classic chameleon behavior.
  • If you love the Fifty Shades of Grey or Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, you may be leaning toward a more intense (or niche) type.

This question isn’t about the song; it’s about intention. Are you deliberate in creating a mood, or do you let things happen as they come?

3 & 7. How Do You Feel About Being Watched? And About Watching Others?

These two questions are mirror images. Most people are much less comfortable being watched than watching someone else, or vice versa, and that’s completely normal.

  • Traumatized at the thought? That leans vanilla newbie.
  • “Depends who’s watching” or “depends who’s involved” = chameleon.
  • “Fine as long as there’s consent” = connoisseur.
  • If you’re reminded of past exhibitionist or voyeur parties, you’re at the expert level (or beyond).

Notice the difference between your answers to these two questions; it often reveals less obvious boundaries or desires. The gap between being seen and seeing is where a lot of new self-discoveries begin.

4. What Does “Kinky” Look Like to You?

Is it playful, intense, seductive, or classic? Any level can enjoy any of these styles, but:

  • Vanilla newbies might stick to classics, like handcuffs and lingerie.
  • Experts might crave the exact same look but with a deeper, more intense focus.
  • What this really shows is your flavor—your personal aesthetic or vision of kink.

5. What’s Your Bondage Experience?

  • If handcuffs are as far as you’ve gone, you may be a newbie.
  • Knowing simple rope ties and combining blindfolds shows connoisseur skills.
  • Going back and forth between dominance and submission? That’s pure chameleon.
  • Suspension, ball gags, and edge play is often expert-level (or one of the niche types).

6. Describe Your Ideal Relationship Dynamic

  • Mostly cuddling and romance = vanilla newbie.
  • Lots of communication, some spice = connoisseur.
  • Clear rules and roles, including punishments = expert.
  • No labels, flexible relationships = chameleon.
  • Hardcore kink scenes and parties? You could be one of the secret types.

Any answer is valid. Sometimes a couple’s desires seem opposite, but usually, there’s a way to meet both needs without compromise. Communication is everything.

8. How Do You Feel About Experimentation?

  • Only a few favorite positions? Vanilla newbie.
  • “Everyone should try something once” is a connoisseur’s mindset.
  • “Nothing left I haven’t done” signals expert.
  • Go through phases? That’s your chameleon showing.
  • Lots of fantasies but too nervous to try? You might be on the edge of embracing a new type.

9. Pain: Yes or No?

Your feelings about pain are some of the best indicators of your kink level.

  • “Intimacy should be only about pleasure” = vanilla newbie.
  • “I love exploring pain thresholds, as long as there’s a safe word” = connoisseur or expert.
  • Mixing it up based on mood = chameleon.
  • Craving extreme pain or scenes that scare others could point to an advanced or niche type.

Don’t forget: kink isn’t a pain contest. It’s about what you enjoy.

10. What Experience Turns You Off the Most?

sexual turn offs

What doesn’t do it for you is just as telling as what does.

  • Casual hookups turning you off? You want safety—newbie.
  • No connection in rough scenes turns you off? Connoisseur.
  • Skipping consent conversations is a dealbreaker? Expert.
  • Routine bores you? Chameleon.
  • If tenderness grosses you out, you might be one of my niche types!

Which Kink Level Are You?

  • Vanilla Newbie: You’re practical and safe, but might feel “behind.” Remember, you’re not behind—you’re just beginning! Start simple, like trying a blindfold or building a sexy playlist.
  • BDSM Connoisseur: You know what works and you’re attentive to your partner’s needs. Your risk is falling into a rut, so spice up your routine by adding new toys or ideas to things you already enjoy.
  • BDSM Expert: You’ve done a lot and probably done it well. Don’t assume there’s nothing left to learn—seek mastery and mentor others.
  • Kink Chameleon: You’re versatile and open-minded, but your biggest challenge is building consistency. Stick with one thing long enough to see if you love it before chasing the next shiny experience.

If you found yourself mostly matching those mysterious “other” answers, you may be one of the secret types, especially if you’re curious but haven’t jumped in, or if you go to extremes.
